Box Score
Moon Township, Pa. – In a rare non-conference match on Tuesday evening, the Robert Morris University volleyball team played host to the Akron Zips at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Despite a double-double from freshman Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview), Robert Morris (0-7) was unable to earn their first win of the season over Akron (5-1). Despite holding a lead in each of the three sets, the Colonials were unable to prolong a match that ended 21-25, 18-25, 23-25.
Robert Morris would come out firing on all cylinders, taking the first seven points as Fisher and Sydney Sizemore (Taylor Mill, Ky. / Holy Cross) recorded early kills. Akron would slowly work their way back into the set as the Zips were aided by a run of five consecutive kills which made the score 13-12. After a kill by Sizemore put an end to the run by Akron, the Zips would pull even just two points later. After refusing to relinquish the lead while the two teams traded points in the latter portion of the set, the Colonials let the lead slip away after an attacking error made the score 18-17 in favor of the visitors. While the Colonials would pull even, they could not regain the lead and dropped the first set by a score of 25-21.
After jumping out to an early lead in the first set, the Colonials were unable to do the same in the second as the two squads traded points early on. Akron took control of the set with a six-point run to distance itself from Robert Morris and make the score 12-7. The Colonials would never recover from the run as the Zips pushed the lead to eight points before closing out the set by a score of 25-18.
The third set played out in a similar fashion to the second as the two teams traded points early on before Akron would take control of the set. The Colonials would stay within striking distance of the Zips despite facing a five-point deficit. Late in the set, RMU would pull to within a point of Akron, 22-21, forcing the Zips to call a timeout. In the final stages of the match, the Colonials could not pull even with Akron, losing the third set 25-23.
Fisher's ten kills in the match led the Colonials while her 15 digs were a match-high. She would also record the only two service aces for RMU. Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) would be the only other Colonial to record double-digit kills as she provided 11 on the defensive side of the ball for RMU. Sizemore contributed eight kills to the offensive effort of Robert Morris as the Colonials hit just .184 in the match. Robert Morris teamed up for five blocks in the match, four of which were assisted by Leah Dunivan (Troy, Ohio / Miami East).
After four matches at home, the Colonials will hit the road again for another early-season tournament this weekend. Robert Morris will travel west for the Wright State Invitational set to begin on Friday when RMU will take on the host, Wright State, at 6:30 p.m.
