Colonials Take Set from South Carolina, Fall in Four

Box Score

Columbia, S.C. – The Robert Morris University volleyball team started the final day of competition at the Carolina Classic with a match against the host school, South Carolina.  The Colonials would fall in four sets – 24-26, 25-20, 10-25, 16-25 – while they are still looking for their first win of the season.

Robert Morris (0-12) and South Carolina (7-4) would exchange the lead early on in the first set before a three-point run by the Colonials would give them the early advantage, 12-10.  The Colonials would hold that lead until South Carolina claimed it in the final stages of the set, 20-19.  The Gamecocks would push the score to 24-21 before RMU responded with three-consecutive scores to pull tied, 24-24.  South Carolina would take the next two points to earn the set victory, 26-24.

The Colonials would lead the second set from start to finish as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead aided by two kills from Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview).  RMU would quickly extend their lead to seven points with the score 9-2 after a five-point run that included back-to-back service aces by Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont).  The lead for Robert Morris would grow to ten points with the score 20-10, but South Carolina would slowly start to creep back in to the match.  Needing just five points to take the set, the Colonials withstood two three-point runs by the Gamecocks and closed out the set, 25-20, with a kill by Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa).

South Carolina would rout RMU in the third set, as the Colonials would earn just ten points.  The Gamecocks took six of the first seven points in the set and used multiple runs of three-or-more points to pull away from Robert Morris, 25-10.

Early in the fourth set, the Colonials would hold a two-point lead before a four-point run by South Carolina gave the Gamecocks the advantage that they would never relinquish for the remainder of the set.  Robert Morris would pull within a point of tying the Gamecocks multiple times in the set, but a five-point run by South Carolina when the score was 14-13 would end all hope for RMU.  South Carolina closed the match by taking 11 of the final 14 points in the fourth set as the set ended with a score of 25-16.

Coming off of a 20 kill performance on Friday, Fisher would record a team-high 18 kills against South Carolina.  Fisher earned her fourth double-double of the season as she also tallied a team-best 14 digs.  Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) would also contribute ten kills for RMU.  Bograd finished the match with four service aces and 11 digs.

After finishing the Carolina Classic with a 4:00 p.m. match against Western Carolina, RMU plays host to a non-conference match on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. when Youngstown State comes to the Charles L. Sewall center.
