Weekend Trip Ends with Setback at Sacred Heart

The Colonials suffer a 3-0 loss to Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon.

Box Score Fairfield, Conn. - The Robert Morris University women's volleyball team concluded its first weekend of NEC play with a Sunday afternoon match against Sacred Heart.  Coming off of a win on Saturday, the Colonials would fall in straight sets; 17-25, 19-25, 22-25.

Robert Morris (1-15, 1-1 NEC) would allow Sacred Heart (8-6, 2-0 NEC) to take an early lead in the opening set of the match as the Pioneers took five of a possible six points during an early run of play to open up a 5-3 lead.  Unable to string together a run of points and sustain an attacking presence, the Colonials would fall behind by as many as eight points before dropping the set by a score of 25-17.

The second set would start with Sacred Heart taking the first three points before the Colonials rallied to tie the set, 4-4.  The Pioneers would hold on to the lead and surge to a 10-6 advantage before Robert Morris responded with a four-point run to again tie the set.  Just three points later, RMU would hold the lead in the set with the score 12-11.  The advantage would be short-lived as four-point run by Sacred Heart gave them the advantage that would stand for the remainder of the set.  The Pioneers held off any surge by the Colonials and took the second set from RMU by a score of 25-19.

In the final set, Sacred Heart took three of the first four points before RMU tied the score, 3-3.  After facing the early deficit, the two teams would exchange points and the lead multiple times before a five-point run allowed the Pioneers to take the lead for the final time in the match.  The Colonials would remain within striking distance of SHU for the remainder of the set, but they were unable to pull even with the Pioneers or extend the set as they suffered a 25-22 defeat.

Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) led the Colonials' offense with nine kills.  On the defensive side of the ball, Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) and Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview) each recorded 11 digs while Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) paced RMU with four block assists.

The Colonials return to the Charles L. Sewall Center for a pair of Northeast Conference home games on Saturday and Sunday.  Robert Morris will play host to St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday before rival LIU Brooklyn comes to town on Sunday.  Both matches are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
