Colonials Drop Four-Set Match to Crosstown Rivals

Robert Morris falls to 0-6 after being defeated by Duquesne.

Box Score Moon Township, Pa. – In the final match of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational, the Robert Morris University volleyball team took on its crosstown rivals, Duquesne, in a match that would last four sets.

A second set victory helped Robert Morris (0-6) push the match to four sets behind a double-double from Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and Colonials recording double-digit digs.  Duquesne (4-2) would take the first set 25-22 before the Colonials evened the match with a 25-16 victory in the second stanza.  The Dukes would take the third set by a score of 25-15 and the final set, 25-20.

Despite scoring first in the opening set, Robert Morris allowed Duquesne to take the early lead.  Still in the early stages of the set, the Colonials would hold the lead, 8-7.  The Dukes would regain the lead for good by going on a three-point run to make the score 10-8.  The deficit facing RMU would grow to be six points with the score 18-12, at which point the Colonials would call a timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Colonials would score the next three points, cutting their deficit in half.  Robert Morris would come within a point of the Dukes with the score 23-22 after another three-point run.  Resuming play after a timeout by Duquesne, the Dukes would take the final two points of the first set to win, 25-22.

In the second set, the Colonials would come out of the gates swinging with six kills in the first ten rallies while taking eight of the initial ten points of the set.  An early six-point lead would grow to eleven points with the score 22-11 before taking the set by a score of 25-16.  In the set, the Colonials would hit .441 as Sydney Sizemore (Taylor Mill, Ky. / Holy Cross) led the team with six kills while successfully converting two-thirds of her attempts.

Duquesne would regain control of the match after a convincing 25-15 defeat of the Colonials in the third set.  The Dukes and Robert Morris would be tied just once in the set when the score was just 3-3.  From there, Duquesne would go on a six-point run to push the score to 15-7.  Although the Colonials would try to string together a run of points to regain their footing in the match, the Dukes would take the pivotal set by a score of 25-15.

In a tightly contested fourth set, the two teams would exchange the lead twice while being tied on five different occasions before either team had ten points.  Duquesne would start to pull away from Robert Morris in the middle of the set as they held a four-point lead, 13-9.  That deficit facing the Colonials would evaporate as the team rallied back to tie the score, 16-16, after a kill by April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe).  Robert Morris was unable to regain the lead from Duquesne and let the set slip away as the Dukes emerged victorious, 25-20.

Sizemore led the Colonials' attack with a personal-best sixteen kills while Robb contributed twelve kills as a part of her eighth career double-double.  Robb's double-double also consisted of fourteen digs, four behind the team high of eighteen posted by Krivoniak.  Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont), Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview), and Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) each contributed at least ten kills.  Leah Dunivan (Troy, Ohio / Miami East) led the Robert Morris blocking effort with three solo blocks and two block assists.

Robert Morris returns to the court on Tuesday night with a non-conference match against Akron.  First serve against the Zips is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
