Pittsburgh, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team dropped its third consecutive game at the friendly confines of 84 Lumber Arena, as it fell to Colgate University this afternoon, 6-3.
Robert Morris (1-3-0, 0-0-0 CHA) outshot Colgate (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC), 33-27, but didn't have an answer for the Raiders power-play attack, which scored two goals.
Colgate needed just 45 seconds to open up the scoring, as a shot from the blue line was redirected past sophomore goaltender
Jessica Dodds.
The Raiders doubled their lead to 2-0 less than a minute into the second period. That two-goal advantage would only last for 39 seconds, however, as sophomore forward
Rikki Meilleur scored off a faceoff in the Colonial offensive zone. Her second goal in as many games was assisted by junior assistant captain
Ashley Vesci.
Colgate responded two and a half minutes later with a power-play tally. The Raiders would extend their advantage to three goals at the 8:29 mark of the frame, scoring seconds after junior defenseman
Leah Carlson returned to the ice after service a cross-checking penalty.
RMU battled back to cut Colgate's lead in half as senior assistant captain
Maddie Collias wrapped one past the Raider goaltender with 8:36 remaining in the period. Freshman forward
Jessica Gazzola picked up the lone assist on the play.
Colgate answered again just a minute and 20 seconds later after Carlson sat in the box for holding.
The Colonials came out strong in the final frame, scoring less than eight minutes in as freshman forward
Katherine Murphy lit the lamp for the first time in her career. Senior forward
Katie Fergus and sophomore defenseman
Mikaela Lowater gained the helpers on the goal.
RMU had numerous chances to cut the Raider lead to one, but it was the visitors who'd get the last laugh as they scored with 14 seconds remaining to set the final.
Dodds made 21 saves in the loss.
Robert Morris looks to rebound tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match against Colgate. Opening faceoff is set for 3:05 p.m. from 84 Lumber Arena.
