Teaneck, N.J. – The
Robert Morris University men's soccer team lost in overtime for the second straight game as Sam Durkot's overtime tally gave Fairleigh Dickinson a 3-2 win against the Colonials in a Northeast Conference game at University Stadium Sunday afternoon. RMU slips to 5-7-1 and 0-2 in the league while FDU improves to 3-8-1 and levels its NEC mark at 1-1.
Robert Morris received goals from two sources, one reliable and one unexpected. Junior
Neco Brett tallied his 13th marker of the season while freshman
Rafael Bruzual scored the first goal of his career.
Brett's score gave RMU a 1-0 lead just four minutes after the opening kick.
Bruce Cullen's sixth assist of the season set up the goal. The score remained deadlocked to halftime.
Nico Wright found himself in the right place at the right time in the 54th minute, collecting a blocked shot in the center of the RMU box before tying the game 1-1. Casey Abelein then found Godfred Baffi in the 70th minute to give the host squad a 2-1 lead.
Bruzual, a reserve forward for RMU, was able to take advantage of some indecision by Knights keeper Matthew Weigner and tie the game in 88th minute. As Weigner weighed his options, Bruzual was able to collect a loose ball and score his first career goal.
The equalizing score did not last long, however, as FDU scored on its first real opportunity of the extra session. Durkot scored on a direct kick from the top right corner of the RMU box, hooking a left-footed shot inside the right post.
Brenden Alfery finished with saves for the Colonials while Weigner turned aside two shots.
Robert Morris returns to North Athletic Complex Friday, Oct. 17, to host LIU Brooklyn in a 3:00 p.m. match.
