Emmitsburg, Md. – Robert Morris University junior
Francesca Springer had not recorded a point in 38 career games before scoring twice to lift the Colonials to a resounding 5-1 win at Northeast Conference rival Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon. Springer received plenty of help from classmate
Kristie Hamilton who tied the RMU single-game record of three assists.
In addition to the efforts of Springer and Hamilton, Kate Austin tacked on three points with a goal and an assist. Freshman
Kasia Bak tallied her first career goal in the game and rookie
Greer Monahan picked up a helper.
The Colonials started toward their season-high for goals early, taking the lead just 4:36 after kick-off. Hamilton found Springer who placed her first career marker into the bottom left corner of the net from near the penalty spot. The lead was short lived as the host Mountaineers knotted the game in the 12th minute. Jordan Fine's second goal of the year was a solo effort, a steal followed by a shot inside the post.
Robert Morris would score twice, however, before the end of the opening half. Hamilton found
Lauren Sulkowski inside the Mount penalty box with a short pass. Sulkowski, with her back to goal, spun and fired her first goal of the season into the right side of the net.
The lead grew to 3-1 before half as Hamilton's presence in the middle of the field proved vital once again. This time she threaded a ball down the seam of the Mount defense, leading Bak to a breakaway and her first career goal.
Springer got her second of the game came in the 53rd minute. A long ball by Hamilton set both Austin and Springer in on goal. After getting the keeper to commit, Austin played a short cross to Springer who tapped in the easy finish. Austin then capped the scoring, pounding home a low shot after nice give-and-go play with Monahan.
RMU keeper
Becky Schoenecker earned the victory in net, allowing just one goal while stopping three shots.
The Colonials wrap up the home portion of its regular season schedule by hosting Saint Francis U. in a 1:00 p.m. game next Sunday, Oct. 26.
