Inside Combo Lifts No. 6 UNC Over Robert Morris

Freshman guard Marcquise Reed scores a game-high 24 points in second collegiate game

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The Robert Morris University men's basketball team opened up a five-game road swing Sunday with a 103-59 loss to No. 6 North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

The Colonials slipped to 0-2 for the second time in three years with the setback, while the Tar Heels improve to 2-0.

The inside combo of Kennedy Meeks and Brice Johnson combined for 44 points and 20 rebounds for UNC while shooting 72.7 percent (16-for-22) from the field. Meeks supplied 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Johnson finished with a team-high 23 points and eight boards.

The Tar Heels opened the contest by scoring the game's first 12 points. Marcquise Reed snapped RMU's offensive drought with a jumper at the 16:07 mark of the first half, which was a sign of what was to come from the freshman guard. Reed's basket sparked the Colonials, as Robert Morris went on a 10-3 surge to close its deficit to 15-10 at the 13:33 mark of the first half as the rookie supplied eight points during the run.

The advantage for North Carolina again reached double digits with 12:10 left before halftime, 21-10, thanks to four points from Johnson and a layup from Meeks. UNC would keep its cushion in double digits until an 8-2 run that featured four points from Reed and three points from senior guard David Appolon closed RMU's deficit to 33-25 with 5:33 left before the break.

The Tar Heels regrouped, outscoring Robert Morris, 20-10, over the final five minutes of the first stanza in grabbing a 53-35 lead at the break. UNC scored the first 11 points of the second half to open up a 29-point advantage and never looked back.

Reed took home game-high honors in scoring on the contest, converting 10 of his 15 shots from the field, including his only attempt from beyond the arc, and went 3-for-4 at the charity stripe for 24 points. He also added two rebounds and a steal. He was the only player from RMU to score in double figures.

Junior guard Rodney Pryor finished with nine points, three rebounds and a steal for Robert Morris, while Appolon contributed five points and a team-high five rebounds.

In addition to Johnson and Meeks, Marcus Paige (15 points) and Justin Jackson (13) scored in double figures for North Carolina, which shot 50.7 percent (36-for-71) from the field but was just 4-of-16 (25%) from beyond the arc.

Robert Morris continues its five-game road swing Wednesday, Nov. 19, with an 8:00 p.m. tip against Bradley at Carver Arena in Peoria, Ill.

Stat Of The Night: Sparked by Reed's 24-point performance, the Robert Morris bench shot 48.4 percent (16-for-33) from the field against the Tar Heels.
