RMU Downs Duquesne For First Home Victory

Colonials earn fifth straight victory over Dukes with 75-59 win

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's basketball team picked up its first home victory of the 2014-15 campaign Saturday and snapped a two-game slide with a 75-59 victory over Duquesne at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

The Colonials avoided dropping their first four games at home to start a season and improved to 3-6 with the victory, while the Dukes slipped to 3-4.

Derrick Colter opened the scoring with a three-pointer off a feed from TySean Powell, but RMU scored the next 10 points of the game and never trailed again. Robert Morris received balanced scoring during its opening salvo, as five different players scored.

The Dukes responded with a 9-5 spurt to trim their deficit to 15-12 as Eric James provided the spark with six consecutive points.

Freshman forward Elijah Minnie stemmed the tide with a dunk off a feed from senior guard David Appolon at the 11:59 mark of the first half, which ignited a 14-3 run that gave Robert Morris a 29-15 advantage. Junior guard Rodney Pryor provided the Colonials with six points, while freshman guard Marcquise Reed hit a three-pointer.

Jordan Stevens would hit a triple of his own with 1:13 left before halftime to pull the Dukes within 37-30 and settled for a nine-point deficit at the break, 39-30, after a layup from junior forward Aaron Tate with just under a minute left in the first half.

Pryor, who scored 14 points in the first stanza, scored the first five points after intermission to give the Colonials a 44-30 cushion, but Colter sparked the Dukes by scoring 10 points during a 12-2 run that trimmed RMU's lead to 46-42 with 15:47 remaining.

RMU called timeout and responded by scoring the game's next 14 points to take control, 60-42, with 9:52 to play. Five different Colonials scored, led by Pryor and sophomore guard Kavon Stewart, who each scored four points.

"I thought we had one of our best performances of the season today," head coach Andrew Toole. "We moved the ball really well. We continued to work our offense, and that gets you higher percentage shots. We were also much better defensively, flying around and contesting shots. Because our energy and focus was where it needed to be, it was easier to coach and teach."

Pryor led all scorers with 25 points, hitting nine of his 12 shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from deep, while going 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Stewart and Minnie each recorded double-doubles for the Colonials, with Stewart establishing career highs in points (12), assists (11) and rebounds (7). Minnie, meanwhile, finished with 10 points and 10 caroms while posting a pair of blocks and two steals. Reed also finished in double figures for RMU with 10 points.

Duquesne was led by Colter and James, as each scored 17 points. Colter added six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while L.G. Gill paced the Dukes in rebounds with nine.

Robert Morris returns to the court Wednesday, Dec. 17, with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Toledo at Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio.

Stat of the Night: 171 – Number of games since two players from RMU registered a double-double. The double-doubles for Stewart and Minnie are the first since Dec. 30, 2009, when former Colonials Russell Johnson and Dallas Green turned the trick in a 72-67 victory at Youngstown State.
