Moon Township, Pa. – The Youngstown State women's basketball team went 33-of-35 from the free throw line to stay undefeated with a 73-65 overtime victory against
Robert Morris University at the Charles L. Sewall Center Wednesday night. The Penguins remain unbeaten at 9-0 while the Colonials slip to 2-7 in the non-conference season.
The Penguins made the ninth-most free throws in Division I this season on a night that RMU held them to just 29.5 percent (18-61) from the field. The Colonials, meanwhile, shot 33.3 percent (24-72) and were 8-of-13 from the charity stripe.
A three-pointer by
Anna Niki Stamolamprou with 9:22 left in the second half gave RMU its biggest lead of the game at 49-35. Youngstown State, however, scored the game's next eight points to start a 27-12 run over the final nine minutes of the second half.
Stamolamprou's jumper gave the host Colonials a six-point lead with 2:17 to play, but proved to be the last points in regulation for RMU. The Penguins Jenna Hirsch answered with a long jumper on the other end. Her bucket was followed, fittingly enough, by four consecutive free throws from Heidi Schlegel, the final one knotting the game at 61 and sending the game to overtime.
The Penguins scored the first four points of the extra session before a pair of free throws by
Ashley Ravelli made it a two-point game with 2:05 remaining. Four more YSU points, two from the charity stripe, were again answered by a Ravelli put back before the Penguins iced the game with four more free throws in the final 21 seconds.
The Colonials scored the first 12 points of the game as
Janee Brown scored two lay-ups followed by three-pointers from
Judith Sole and
Megan Smith. Stamolamprou finished the run with a baseline jumper that forced an YSU timeout 3:45 into the game. The Penguins would cut the lead to five points, but RMU recovered to go into halftime holding a 33-20 lead.
Ten different players scored for Robert Morris led by Stamolamprou's 16 points. The sophomore guard recorded a career-high nine rebounds, just missing out on her first double-double. She was 7-of-18 from the field and scored 14 of her points in the second half.
Mikalah Mulrain and Smith each had eight points while Mulrain pulled in eight boards.
Schlegel led all scorers with 22 points. She did most of her damage from the chalk where she was 14-of-15 after connecting on just 4-of-17 shots from the field. She added 11 boards for a double-double. Latisha had a double-double as well with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Indiya Benjamin chipped in 13 points and Jenna Hirsch added 10.
Robert Morris travels to Cornell for a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday, December 20.
