Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra University took the lead on the game's first possession and never looked backed as they raced to a 71-51 victory over the
Robert Morris University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon. It was the sixth road game in the first seven games of this season for the Colonials (2-5).
Judith Sole had the best game of her young career, recording the first double-double of the season for RMU. She finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Spanish-born forward went 6-of-14 from the floor and hit her first career trey as well.
Anna Niki Stamolamprou finished with a game-high 18 points and chipped in on the glass with seven rebounds as well.
"It certainly was a disappointing performance. We have to learn to overcome our obstacles and be stronger on the road as well as playing at another level, especially when you have couple of key people injured," said 12th-year head coach
Sal Buscaglia. "Although our schedule is extremely challenging, I'm hoping that we will learn from it. I believe we are going to be successful, but right now we are a work in progress with this young team."
Krystal Luciano hit a three-pointer on its first possession of the game and got Hofstra (5-3) off to a running start. Kelly Loftus followed up with a pair of treys and the Colonials trailed 9-0 less than 2:30 into the game. RMU never found its rhythm in the opening frame, finishing 6-of-28 from the field and missing all 11 of its three-point attempts.
Loftus, meanwhile, hit four three-pointers and finished with 15 first half points. The Pride accumulated a 30-16 advantage on the glass as it powered to a 37-16 halftime lead.
Stamolamprou scored the first seven points of the second half for RMU. The Colonials looked primed to make a run, cutting a 21-point halftime deficit to 15 with an 8-3 run. A 12-2 Hofstra answer, however, gave the host squad its biggest lead of the game, 56-31, midway through the frame.
Loftus 15 first half points were enough to give her team-high honors. Ashunae Durant chipped in with 12 points as 10 different Pride players found their way into the scoring column.
Robert Morris is off for eight days before return to the Charles L. Sewall Center Sunday, Dec. 14 when they welcome cross-town rival Duquesne for a 1:00 p.m. game.
