Robert Morris University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match to Akron in three sets this evening from James A. Rhodes Arena.
Robert Morris (1-10, 0-0 NEC) dropped its ninth-straight match to Akron (6-5, 0-0 MAC), despite holding the edge in blocks (12.0 to 9.0) and service aces (5 to 3).
The Zips and Colonials battled back-and-forth in the first set, but Akron ultimately won it, 25-23. Sophomore outside hitter
Madelyn Betts led the offensive charge with three kills, while classmate
Leah Dunivan picked up two solo blocks in the frame.
RMU jumped out an early 6-3 advantage in the second set, forcing the Zips to spend an early timeout. After Akron went up 8-7, the two teams traded leads until the Colonials used two solo blocks from
Becky Jay and kills from Betts and freshman setter
Brianna Frakes to go up 19-16.
That lead was extended to 24-19 thanks to a kill and solo block from Dunivan along with three errors. However, the Zips stormed back, picking up the next five points and responding when RMU had set point at 25-24. Akron continued its run by picking up the next two points, taking the set, 27-25.
The Zips completed the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third set. Jay tallied four kills in the frame, while senior outside hitter
Erica Robb had back-to-back service aces at 4-4.
Frakes registered her second career double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs. Senior libero Bograd led the Colonials in digs with 14, while Jay picked up eight kills and seven blocks (four solo, three assist).
Robert Morris is back in action on Friday as it takes on UC-Irvine in its first game at the Golden Grizzly Invite. That match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start from the Athletics Center O'rena.
