Offense Comes Alive in 85-65 Victory Over Pioneers

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's basketball team shot 54.7 percent (35-for-64) from the field and closed out a two-game homestand at the Charles L. Sewall Center Sunday afternoon with an 85-65 victory over Sacred Heart.

The Colonials improved to 8-10 overall on the 2014-15 campaign thanks to the win, including 4-2 in Northeast Conference play, while the Pioneers dipped to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Senior forward Lucky Jones was the main offensive force for RMU in the first half, scoring 18 points. He hit all six of his shots from the field, including a 5-for-5 performance from beyond the arc, while also grabbing four rebounds and posting two assists, a block and a steal.

Trailing, 14-10, after Steve Glowiak hit a three-pointer with 15 minutes left in the first half, Robert Morris used a 17-5 run over the next seven and-a-half minutes to grab a 27-19 advantage. Junior guard Rodney Pryor started the spurt with a three-point play thanks to a layup and foul on Glowiak, while Jones hit a pair of three-pointers.

Pryor and freshman guard Marcquise Reed also scored in double figures in the first 20 minutes of action as RMU grabbed a 47-35 lead at the break. The pair each scored 11 points, and the trio of Jones, Pryor and Reed combined for 40 points in the first half on 16-for-20 (80%) shooting.

Early in the second half the Colonials pushed their lead to 56-39 after a layup from Pryor and Robert Morris also owned a 59-43 cushion after a layup from junior forward Aaron Tate with 13:41 remaining. The Pioneers responded with a 14-4 surge to close to within 63-57 as Glowiak twice connected from beyond the arc while Cane Broome supplied five points.

Reed stemmed the tide for RMU, as his jumper with 8:37 to go ignited a 15-3 run to help the Colonials take control. The rookie scored seven points during the spurt and also recorded assists on another two baskets.

"We shot the ball at an incredible rate," head coach Andrew Toole said. "We attacked the paint and didn't settle for jump shots early in the shot clock. It was our most consistent effort of the year offensively."

Reed tied a career high with 24 points to take home game-high scoring honors while also establishing personal bests in both rebounds (6) and assists (5). He finished 10-for-16 shooting from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, while going 2-for-3 at the free-throw line.

Jones added 22 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double in the last four games, while Pryor chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Tate also scored in double figures for the first time at Robert Morris, posting 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field while also grabbing eight boards. Joining Tate in the production for the RMU frontcourt was freshman forward Andre Frederick, who in 18 minutes supplied career highs in both points (7) and rebounds (8).

Sacred Heart was led by De'Von Barnett, who scored 21 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Glowiak added 12 points off the bench for the Pioneers.

RMU takes to the road for a two-game road swing, beginning Thursday, Jan. 22, with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., at Knott Arena.
