Jones Helps Lift Colonials Over Terriers, 67-65

Senior forward gives RMU lead for good with 17 seconds to play thanks to three-pointer

Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. – Senior forward Lucky Jones drained a three-pointer with 17 seconds to play to help lift the Robert Morris University men's basketball team to its fourth straight road win Saturday with a 67-65 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn at the Pope P.E. Center.

The Colonials evened their overall record at 10-10 thanks to the win and improved to 6-2 in the Northeast Conference, while the Terriers slipped to 12-9 overall and 6-2 in league play.

The triple for Jones gave RMU a 66-65 edge, and on SFC's next possession, Amdy Fall missed a layup, with junior forward Aaron Tate coming down with the rebound. He was immediately fouled and hit one of his two attempts at the stripe with 11.3 seconds remaining.

St. Francis Brooklyn called timeout, but a running layup by Brent Jones as time expired was off the mark, giving Robert Morris the win.

In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, the Colonials owned a 35-31 lead entering the second half and grabbed their biggest advantage of the contest, 46-37, when Lucky Jones connected from deep with 14:59 to play.

RMU also owned a 52-44 cushion at the 12:16 mark after freshman guard Marcquise Reed hit a pair from the free-throw line, but St. Francis Brooklyn scored the next 10 points of the game to grab a 54-52 lead with 9:40 left. Brent Jones and Tyreek Jewell each connected from deep during the surge, while Jalen Cannon hit a layup to give the Terriers their first lead of the second half.

That set up the back-and-forth affair the rest of the contest. Tied, 63-63, with 1:41 to go, Reed missed a jumper for the Colonials and fouled Brent Jones on the other end. Brent Jones converted both to give SFC a 65-63 lead.

A pair of empty possessions followed before senior guard David Appolon grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed jumper by junior guard Rodney Pryor and fed Lucky Jones, who buried the triple to push Robert Morris back in front.

"Tonight was a win thanks to toughness," head coach Andrew Toole said. "That's what it's all about. It was physical and a battle in the paint. We made one more shot and got one more stop. I'm so happy for Lucky, as well. We've been looking for that from Lucky, and it was great to see it fall for him."

Lucky Jones led a balanced offensive attack for the Colonials with 15 points, including 10 in the second half. He shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field after the break, including both of his attempts from beyond the arc, and also grabbed six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Kavon Stewart chipped in a career-high 13 points while posting three assists and three steals, while Pryor scored all 12 of his points in the first half and also grabbed a team-high eight boards.

St. Francis Brooklyn was led by Cannon, who registered a double-double thanks to game-high honors in both points (21) and rebounds (16). Jewell added 15 points, while Brent Jones chipped in 11 points and nine assists.

Robert Morris returns home to the Charles L. Sewall Center for its next contest, welcoming Fairleigh Dickinson Thursday, Jan. 29, for a 7:00 p.m. tip.

Stat of the Night: 100 – Number of career wins for head coach Andrew Toole thanks to Saturday's win at St. Francis Brooklyn. Toole joins former head coach Jarrett Durham as the only head coaches in program history to eclipse 100 victories.
