Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's basketball team held off a late run by the Bryant Bulldogs to hold on for an 87-84 victory against the Northeast Conference frontrunners at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon. The win is the sixth straight for the Colonials who improve to 9-11 overall and 7-2 in the Northeast Conference. Bryant has never won at the Sewall Center (0-7) and slips to 14-6 overall and 7-2 in league games.
Robert Morris was led by a career-high 28 points from sophomore guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou. The Greek-born sniper knocked down seven three-pointers, third most by an RMU player and the most by the sophomore in her short career.
"I am very proud of this young team," said 12th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia after picking up his 197th win as Colonials coach. "We still have areas to improve on, but one this is for sure - we play as a team and have multiple scorers. Anna Niki's shooting was simply incredible and Ashley Ravelli has become a great floor general. Her two pressure free throws at the end were clutch. There's still a lot of season left. We just have to remain focused."Sophomore forward
Judith Sole added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Ashley Ravelli matched Sole's point total, including a crucial five points in the final 1:29 of regulation. Freshman
Megan Smith chipped in with 10 points.
Robert Morris took control of the contest early in the first half with a 19-5 run over 5:40. Ravelli hit a jumper, starting a 9-0 run that ended when Stamolamprou hit a three-pointer with 13:07 left in the second half. The Colonials would push the margin to 23-11 when Stamolamprou and
Lou Mataly knocked down back-to-back treys.
The Bulldogs cut the margin to as six points before the Colonials would again surge out ahead to take a 46-34 lead into halftime. The team's offenses both picked up in the final five minutes of the opening frame as they combined for 25 points during that span.
Sole scored on the opening possession of the second half to give the Colonials their biggest lead of the game at 16 points. RMU retained the double-digit lead for the next 10 minutes, but a Tiersa Winder thre-pointer sparked a 15-5 run by the Bulldoges. Morgan Olander scored the final six points of that surge to bring the visiting squad to within six points, 69-63, with 5:36 to play.
Four straight points from the charity stripe by Stamolamprou stemmed the tide and RMU pushed the margin back to 11 points, 85-74, with an old-fashioned three-point play by Ravelli.
The Bulldogs, however, were not finished. An Olander layup with 1:06 left was followed by an RMU turnover and an offensive put-back and three-point play by Breann Rucker. Another Colonial turnover allowed Ivory Bailey to drill a three-pointer to cut the margin to three points. After a missed lay-up by the home team, Melissa Corraro made a lay-up to polish off a 10-0 run and pull to within one point, 85-84.
Ravelli, however, hit two free throws with seven seconds left to push the lead back to three points and
Rebeca Navarro came up with a steal on the ensuing possession to ice the game.
Robert Morris returns to the hardwood Monday, Feb. 2, by hosting Fairleigh Dickinson in a 10:00 a.m. contest as part of the team's annual Elementary School Day promotion.
