Pittsburgh, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team continued its success at home with a 4-2 win over Merrimack College at 84 Lumber Arena Saturday afternoon to complete the sweep of the weekend series versus the Warriors.
In her fourth multi-point game in five outings, redshirt sophomore
Brittany Howard extended both her goal and point streaks to two games with one score and two assists in the win. Freshman
Sarah Quaranta netted her first career goal and dished out two helpers in her second consecutive multi-point effort. Junior defenseman
Mikaela Lowater recorded the first goal of the game, her second on the year, and boosted her assists on the season to two with a dish on the Quaranta goal.
Howard notched Robert Morris' (2-3-1) game-winner in the third period on a feed from the freshman duo of Quaranta and
Amber Rennie. A power-play tally from freshman
Kirsten Welsh, her first career goal, sealed the deal for the Colonials as it lifted the home team to a 4-1 lead late in the third.
Merrimack (0-4-0) once again attempted to stir up a late rally in the third on a goal with 2:04 left until the final buzzer, but to no avail.
For the second consecutive game and second time this season, it was RMU that struck first and took an early 1-0 lead, but Merrimack was quick to respond and evened the score with less than a minute remaining in the frame. Once the Colonials went ahead, 2-1, they carried a lead the rest of the game.
Robert Morris more than doubled Merrimack's shots on goal, 37-15.
The Colonials hit the road next weekend for a two-game series at RPI on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. in Troy, N.Y.
