Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. – Senior
Neco Brett scored in the 109th minute and
Brenden Alfery tied his career high with 11 saves as the
Robert Morris University men's soccer team upended St. Francis Brooklyn at Brooklyn Bridge Park Sunday afternoon in a Northeast Conference game. The victory improves the Colonials to 8-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in NEC games while the Terriers suffer just their second loss of the season to move to 9-2-3 and 2-1-1 in league matches.
With time winding down on the second overtime of the scoreless affair, Robert Morris won possession of the ball in the defensive third and
Keane McIvor took control at midfield. He played a lofted ball over the Terriers defense where
Neco Brett chased it down. The senior forward didn't miss the opportunity, sending a shot into the right side netting to tally the gamewinning goal at 108:19.
It was the fourth-latest goal in team history, and the second latest since the overtime format switched to two 10-minute periods. The score also increased Brett's conference lead in that category, giving him 10 on the season.
St. Francis Brooklyn came into the weekend as the top ranked team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Region poll and was receiving votes in the NSCAA National Poll. The Terriers had not lost a home conference game since 2013 and RMU had not won at SFC since 2005.
Alfery was brilliant throughout making a total of 11 saves, including six in the second half. His game total ties his career record, the same number he had in a game at Pitt earlier this season. The clean sheet was his fifth of the season, moving him into fifth in the RMU single season annals.
The Colonials wrap up the home portion of their regular season slate next weekend. They will host Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, Oct. 23, at 3:00 p.m. before welcoming the Bryant Bulldogs on Sunday, Oct. 25.
