Thompson’s Career-High 22 Kills Lead RMU to 3-1 Win

Three Colonials record kills in double figures

New Britain, Conn. – Three Colonials registered kills in double figures including a career-high 22 from senior Kristin Thompson in Sunday's 3-1 victory at Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State.

Robert Morris University (11-11, 5-2) quickly rebounded after yesterday's 3-1 loss at Bryant, and despite another slow start, was able to regroup and take control of the match in set two. CCSU's (10-10, 2-5) loss in today's contest marks its third in a row.

Thompson hit at a blazing .513 (22-for-39, three errors), her best percentage of the season since Sept. 1. She also tallied a team-high six block assists. Juniors Leah Dunivan and Arden Fisher joined Thompson in double-digit kills with 10 and 12, respectively. As a team, the Colonials combined for a season-high 59 kills. Fisher also racked up 19 digs to record her second consecutive double-double, her 13th of the season and 35th in her career. Freshman setter Liz Campbell dished out a career-high 55 assists.

The Colonials looked out of sorts in the opening set, as they committed 14 total errors including eight hitting and four service mistakes in the frame and were blocked a total of five times by the Blue Devils. Robert Morris quickly erased the first set, however, and started the second on a 6-0 run and would never look back.

It was all RMU in sets two and three, as the score tied just once in the second set and CCSU never pulled ahead in either frame. Set four was a back-and-forth affair until the very end when a 6-0 Robert Morris run put the Colonials ahead, 23-20, and in good position to close out the match.

The Colonials return to the Charles L. Sewall Center on Saturday, Oct. 24 for their inaugural Alumni Recognition Match versus NEC opponent Saint Francis U. at 3 p.m.

Head Coach Dale Starr
On Kristin Thompson's performance…
Her whole career has been really good in conference. She's always been better in conference. Last year at the beginning of the year she wasn't even playing. Once she finds the floor she never gives that up. She's been a slow starter but I can see the argument for it being her last year and last go around and leaving it all out there. She was absolutely unstoppable today. It was one of the more dominant performances I've seen in my years here. It reminded me of my first year when I had [middles] Hannah Veith and Amanda Graham. She reminded me of those two today.

On taking control of the match after dropping the first set…
It was a little bit disconcerting to see us start like that. We've come out of the gates really slow the last two matches and we can't continue to bury ourselves and expect to come back and win. We bounced back a little bit better today. CCSU made a couple more errors and we served more effectively today. [CCSU] fought back and we knew they would and we played much better defensively today than we did yesterday. We blocked a lot better today than we did yesterday too.

A Match for the Books
Kristin Thompson's career-high 22 kills in today's match put her in a four-way tie for ninth all-time in the RMU individual match record books. The most kills recorded by a Colonial in match history is 26.

Stepping Up
Kristin Thompson is hitting .335 in NEC action and has recorded kills in double figures in six of seven conference matches played, including the last four.

Where They Stack Up
Robert Morris now sits in a tie for third place with LIU Brooklyn in the Northeast Conference standings. Bryant and Sacred Heart lead the league with identical 6-1 conference records.
