Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University men's soccer team generated the majority of scoring chances but had to settle for a 1-1 draw as it closed out its regular season home schedule against Bryant at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The overtime game was the seventh of the season for RMU, setting a new squad record. The Colonials are now 9-6-1 overall and remain in a playoff position at 3-1-1 in Northeast Conference games. Bryant moves to 3-7-4 and 1-2-2 in league play.
Robert Morris owned a 10-3 advantages in shots in the opening half of play, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. A chippy start to the game saw 17 fouls and five cards in the first half.
Robert Morris struck first, finally scoring in the game's 67th minute. ZachGraziani sent a long ball from right midfield to
Neco Brett at the top of the Bryant box. Brett flicked a header to the far side of the box where
Lucas Puntillo was running in from the left wing. He sent a shot low to the far right post for his fifth score of the season. The assist was the first career point for Graziani.
The Bulldogs quickly tied the match in the 70th minute. A blast from the top of the box by Thomas Binder was blocked by the RMU defense, but the carom found the foot of Jake Lamar 12 yards from net. Lamar took a touch to his left, making enough space to send a left-footed blast high to the near corner.
Both teams would create chances over the final 20 minutes. Brett Larocque of Bryant had the best of those opportunities, but his breakaway attempt was turned aside by senior goalkeeper
Brenden Alfery who came off his line to snuff the shot. Two 10-minute overtime periods failed to produce a scoring chance for either team.
RMU owned a 16-9 advantage in shots. Alfery finished with three saves for the Colonials while Chris Knaub made six saves for the visiting Bulldogs.
Robert Morris travels to Central Connecticut State for a 7:00 p.m. match next Friday, Oct. 30.
