Hamilton, N.Y. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team remains on the hunt for its first win of the season after falling to Colgate, 6-0, at Starr Rink Saturday evening and dropping to 0-3-1 on the year.
The Colonials lost to the Raiders (2-0-0) by their largest deficit on the season and failed to score a goal for the first time in four games played. Despite taking a season-high 31 shots, Robert Morris trailed its opponent in the category for the fourth-straight game. Senior captain
Ashley Vesci stayed aggressive throughout the game and racked up a team-leading, season-high seven shots on goal, including four in the third period. A trio of RMU defensemen including senior
Leah Carlson, freshman
Maggie LaGue and fellow rookie
Kirsten Welsh combined for nine of the Colonials' 21 blocked shots.
Penalties once again proved to be the Achilles heel of this RMU team, as they committed six and served a total of 12 minutes for the miscues. Colgate capitalized on two out of five power play opportunities, one of which occurred during a demoralizing 20 minutes of play for RMU when three Raiders scored four goals in the second frame. Conversely, the Colonials went 0-for-8 on the power play.
Freshman netminder Lauren Baily earned her first collegiate start in goal for the Colonials, but was pulled after the second period following a flurry of Colgate goals in 40 minutes of action. Sophomore
Elijah Milne-Price replaced Bailey between the pipes for the remainder of the game and made eight stops in just her second appearance in two seasons.
Robert Morris makes its first appearance on home ice this season on Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday Oct. 10 versus Merrimack at 7:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m., respectively, at 84 Lumber Arena.
Block PartyThe Colonials have blocked more shots than their opponent in all four games played this season.
