Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's soccer closed out its regular season slate with a 2-1 loss to Northeast Conference-leading Fairleigh Dickinson at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The season, however, is not over for the Colonials as they'll head to the NEC Tournament for the first time in team history after finishing second in the league standings with a 5-3 conference mark and a 9-10 overall record. Fairleigh Dickinson will host the tournament on Nov. 6 and 8 after making it through the league slate unbeaten at 8-0-0.
Robert Morris opened the scoring in the 19th minute when
Melissa Ercoli sent a free kick into the FDU penalty box. Somehow finding the ball after it made its way through the crowd was
Madison Kozlowski who sent her first touch into the netting from eight yards out for her third goal of the season.
Fairleigh Dickinson was able to equalize in the game's 25th minute, taking advantage of extended possession in the offensive third. Jessi Reinhardt sent a pass to the top of the box where Elma Kolenovic collected, made a nice turn and tallied her third of the season from 16 yards out.
Another sustained possession led to the Knights second goal of the game. Mackenzie Reese sent a cross to the center of the box where Kelonovic redirected a shot on net from eight yards out. de Jager reacted quickly to get a foot on it, but the ball carried enough momentum to spin into the lower right corner and give the Knights the lead, 2-1, in the 63rd minute.
de Jager finished the game with nine saves, including several on point blank chances. The Colonials were outshot, 15-9, but held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Colonials, as the number-two seed in the NEC, will take on the Bryant Bulldogs in the semifinals on Friday. RMU lost to Bryant, 1-0, in overtime in their regular season match.
