Brooklyn, N.Y. – The
Robert Morris University men's soccer team watched its season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Saint Francis University in the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinals. The Colonials finished the year with a record of 10-8-1 reached double-digit victories for just the fifth time in team history.
Saint Francis got on the board first just 10 minutes into the game, earning a penalty kick. Conner Rezende took the shot and buried it for his third of the season. The Red Flash extended their lead before halftime, again on a free kick. This time it was Francis de Vries who bent a direct kick inside the right post in the 39th minute for his sixth goal of the year.
The Colonials made the game interesting with 20 minutes left to play.
Matt Fonagy was fouled by Red Flash keeper Marcus Rojas, resulting in the game's second penalty kick, this time for RMU. Three-time NEC Player of the Year
Neco Brett sent his shot low and left, his 13th goal of the year cutting the margin to 2-1.
The goal gave Brett 100 points for his career, a number that puts him third in the team's record books.
Robert Morris looked like it had a chance to equalize with 38 seconds to play, a foul on the edge of the Saint Francis box could have been another penalty kick but instead was placed just inches outside the area.
Lucas Puntillo took the free kick, his blast skipping just wide of the far right post.
Brenden Alfery finished with six saves for the Colonials while Rojas stopped two for the Red Flash.
