Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Colonials Fall In First Road Test of Season

Charlotte, N.C. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball suffered a 94-73 setback in its first road game of the season at Charlotte. The Colonials slip to 1-1 on the year while the 49ers remain unbeaten after two games in the opening weekend.

Anna Niki Stamolamprou led the Colonials with 20 points, 13 of which came in the first half. She went 8-for-17 from the field and 3-of-5 from long range. She added six rebounds, two assists and two steals as well. Rebeca Navarro was perfect from three-point range, going 4-4 and finishing with 16 points. Mikalah Mulrain finished with 11 points.

Charlotte's Alexis Alexander enjoyed an efficient day, tallying 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting and collected a team-high eight rebounds. Ciara Gregory added 16 points and Lefty Webster chipped in with 13.

"When you play a team of this caliber from a very high level conference such as Conference USA, you must play and execute for 40 minutes," said 13th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "I felt that we came out with a great will to win, but the inability to sustain that was evident. The second quarter really changed the whole complexion of the game, giving up 35 points after only giving up 10 in the first quarter. Their interior players especially hurt us. I know playing a team at this level will help us, even in defeat.

"Anna Niki played an outstanding game and Rebeca shot the ball very well. If we keep on working at it, our future is bright this year."

Robert Morris hit its first four shots to open the game, opening a 10-4 lead when Mikalah Mulrain finished off a nice feed from Rebeca Navarro. After a mid-period drought, Stamolamprou and Jones would hit the last three shots of the period to give RMU a 17-10 lead .

The Colonials pushed their lead to nine points when Navarro buried her third trey of the game with 7:05 left in the opening half. Charlotte came alive at the point, an 8-0 surge starting what would be a 19-4 run ending the host squad pulling ahead, 37-31. Robert Morris finally reacted in the form of Stamolamprou who hit a nice runner, then buried a pair of three pointers to end the half. Along with baskets by Mulrain and Jocelynne Jones, the Colonials were able to trim the halftime deficit to 45-39.

Charlotte came out firing the third period, hitting seven of its first eight shots after the break. They outscored RMU 23-16 in the period to push their lead to 68-55 with 10 minutes to play.

An 8-2 run by Robert Morris early in the fourth quarter ended with a three-pointer by Rebeca Navarro that cut the Charlotte lead to single digits, 72-63, with 6:55 to play. The Colonials went cold after that, however, as they hit just two of their final 11 shots down the stretch. The 49ers took advantage with a 23-10 run to finish game.

The Colonials continue a four-game road trip traveling to former Northeast Conference foe and current Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member Monmouth this Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
