Philadelphia, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's basketball team wrapped up a successful trip to the East Coast with a resounding 76-45 victory at La Salle University Saturday night, giving them two wins on the weekend and improving to 3-1 on the young season. Eleven different players scored for the Colonials led by 15 points from junior Anna Niki Stamolamprou.
Stamolamprou added seven rebounds and four assists on a 6-of-11 shooting night that included a 3-7 effort from long range. Sophomore center
Mikalah Mulrain picked up her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked a pair of shots.
Ashley Ravelli,
Megan Smith and
Jocelynne Jones added nine each.
"Our goal is always to play teams from high level conferences and the Atlantic 10 is certainly one of those conferences," said RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia. "I want our kids to believe they can compete against anyone from any conference just by playing hard, playing smart and playing together as a team. That's exactly what happened tonight. We missed some shots early, but we stayed with it. It was great that everybody got to play – they all deserve time because they've all been working hard. It was great to go 2-0 on this road trip."
The Colonials started slow, hitting on just one of their first 10 shots as La Salle crept in front, 5-2. A three-pointer by Ravelli snapped the cold spell and RMU would hit 4-of-5 after that, going on a 10-0 run that put them ahead, 12-5.
Robert Morris hit at a 10-for-23 clip (.435) the rest of the half, knocking down six three-pointers in the opening frame.
Rebeca Navarro hit a pair of treys, as did Stamolamprou whose second long-range bomb gave the Colonials their biggest lead of the half at 28-16.
The Colonials pulled away right from the start of the second half going on a 9-0 run with
Megan Smith scoring on an up-and-under, then a three-pointer from the left wing. Robert Morris would finish 10-of-13 in the quarter and outscore the host Explorers, 27-10, to take a 58-32 advantage into the final frame. Seven different players scored for RMU during the period.
Robert Morris doubled up La Salle in the first five minutes of the final period to take its biggest lead of the game, 70-38, on a pull up jumper by Ravelli with 5:33 to play. The Colonials emptied their bench from that point en route to a 76-45 victory, their first in four tries against La Salle all-time.
Robert Morris finishes a four-game road trip with its shortest excursion of the season traveling 60 miles northwest to take on the Youngstown State Penguins. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Beeghly Center, Tuesday, Nov. 24.
