Robert Morris Powers Past Sacred Heart for 6-3 Win

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Robert Morris men's hockey defeated Sacred Heart 6-3 with strong special teams play Saturday night, bringing the Colonials record to 6-2-3 overall, 5-1-3 in Atlantic Hockey conference play.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring 8:07 into the first with a goal by Josh Phillips. The Pioneers 1-0 lead held into the second, when Connor Doherty score his first of the season to put Sacred Heart in front 2-0.

Robert Morris struck back as David Friedmann burst through on a breakaway for his first goal of the year to cut the SHU lead in half. Brady Ferguson and Chase Golightly worked the puck along the boards and Ferguson's pass found Matt Cope in front of the net, to fire home his fourth of the season to tie the game 2-2.

At the 8:10 mark of the second period, an Evan Moore check from behind resulted in a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct, and the Colonials penalty kill showed its' strength, killing the entire five minutes, including 2:00 of 5-on-3.

While on the penalty kill, Zac Lynch scooped up a loose puck in the Pioneers end and went coast-to-coast, beating the SHU defense, deking out Sacred Heart goaltender Brett Magnus for the ninth shorthanded goal of his career. The goal to give the Colonials a 3-2 advantage increases Lynch's program record mark for shorthanded goals. The Pittsburgh-native leads all active college hockey players in shorthanded goals.

The Pioneers responded with a power play goal by Zach Sabatini to tie the game once again at three apiece heading into the third period.

Robert Morris scored quickly to take a 4-3 lead 1:20 into the third on a power play goal by Cope, his second of the night and fifth of the season. Chase Golightly scored a power play goal, pushing the Colonials lead to 5-3. Freshman forward Kyle Horsman put the puck home for an empty-net goal, the first goal of his college career, making the final score 6-3.
