Robert Morris Falls to Top Seed FDU in NEC Final

Chelsea de Jager, Kristie Hamilton and Cassie Raymond earns places on NEC All-Tournament Team

Teaneck, N.J. – The Robert Morris University women's soccer team saw its dream season come to an Sunday afternoon at the hands of the Northeast Conference's top-seeded team, Fairleigh Dickinson University in the NEC Women's Soccer Championship. The Knights squeaked by the Colonials, 1-0, to win the tournament title and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth that goes with it, improving to 16-5 overall.

That the Colonials played and fought to the bitter end should come as no surprise to anyone who followed their progress this season. This is an RMU team that lost its first four games and were 1-5 at one point before rallying to earn the first postseason berth in team history. Robert Morris ends the year with a 10-11 record.

Sunday, the team's played a scoreless first half, but it wasn't without scoring opportunities. Senior Cassie Raymond narrowly missed the post after taking a lead pass in the box. Senior keeper Chelsea de Jager, who turned away seven first half shots, was at her best on a blast from Rachel Hoekstra in the 30th minute. She reacted quickly on a near post volley from 12 yards, punching a high shot out of danger to keep the game scoreless.

RMU continued to hold the league's highest scoring team at bay until the 73rd minute. That's when Jessi Reinhardt sent a perfect cross into the box, 10 yards from net. Hoekstra was the target and the NEC Golden Boot Award winner didn't miss a second chance, sending her header into the upper ninety for the game's only goal.

de Jager, who finished the day with nine saves and had 13 saves overall, was one of three Robert Morris players named to the NEC All-Tournament Team. Raymond also earned a spot as did senior midfielder Kristie Raymond.
