Special Teams Shines in 4-1 Win At Lindenwood

Howard posts three points and Lowater records two special teams goals in CHA victory

Wentzville, Mo. – The Robert Morris University women's hockey team put yesterday's 4-4 overtime tie at Lindenwood in the rear view and dominated today in a 4-1 win to take control of the College Hockey America series Sunday afternoon at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.

The Colonials (10-6-4, 4-3-3) increased their advantage over the Lions (4-12-4, 2-4-4) in the CHA standings to three points. RMU now trails second-place Syracuse by one point.

Three Colonials recorded multiple points in the victory. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard scored an empty-net goal and added two assists to amass three points, which matches a season high for the forward. Junior defenseman Mikale Lowater posted two special teams goals. Freshman Amber Rennie dished one assist each to Howard and Lowater.

With a 2-1 lead heading into the third, the Colonials continued to skate toward victory and never looked back through the final 20 minutes of action. RMU got charged with two-minutes for checking and Lindenwood went on its second power play of the game at 6:16 into the third. The Colonials, however, capitalized on the special teams situation and Lowater scored a shorthanded goal 41 seconds into the Lions' power play to give her squad a 3-1 edge.

Howard sealed the deal with any empty-net goal with 48 seconds remaining in the game.

RMU used a two-goal second period to swing the momentum permanently in their favor. Lowater put the Colonials on the board first with a power-play tally, her team-leading sixth of the season. RMU finished the day one-for-three on the power play. One minute and nine seconds later, a goal from freshman Sarah Quaranta, the eventual game winner, increased the Robert Morris advantage to two goals.

For the second time in the two-game series, Lindenwood opened the scoring. Following a scoreless first period, the Lions' Brittania Gillanders put the puck past junior goaltender Jessica Dodds 58 seconds into the second period. The Lions, however, would not score the rest of the game.

Robert Morris will now take a break from action over the holidays. The Colonials return to 84 Lumber Arena in 2016 for a two-game series versus Providence on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m.
