Colonials Bury Morgan State With Second Quarter Run

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team went on a 17-0 run late in the second quarter to pull away from Morgan State and secure a 76-44 victory in the non-conference matchup at the Charles L. Sewall Center Wednesday night. The Colonials improve to 4-3 with the victory while the Bears slip to 1-6 overall.

Holding an 11-point lead with five minutes to play in the half, the Colonials scored 17 consecutive points to open up a 46-18 lead. RMU went 7-of-10 from the field during that stretch which included three three-pointers. The run came in the middle of a 30-4 surge that turned a seven-point lead into a 28-point lead in just 5:14 of playing time.

"The second quarter is what did it for us. We played some good basketball and we shared the ball very well," said 13th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "Anna Niki (Stamolamprou) had a double-double – 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists is a nice stat line for 26 minutes. It was a good opportunity to give everybody some playing time.

"I wasn't pleased with the second half, though. We must still learn that we have to play steady throughout the entire game and not just in spurts. We know the challenge we're headed for as we travel to Iowa, the 24th ranked team in the country. But, as I've done in years past, I believe playing these high level teams is a win-win situation for us and something we look forward to."

Stamolamprou, a 5'9" guard, finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to record her second double-double of the season and the third of her career. Mikalah Mulrain was the only other Colonial to reach double figures with 10 points on a night that 11 different RMU players scored.

Robert Morris enjoyed a 44-28 advantage on the glass, turning 13 offensive rebounds into 20 second chance points. The Colonials shot 58.1 percent in the first half and 50.0 percent (29-58) for the game while holding the Bears to just 32.1 percent (17-53) overall.

The decisive second quarter surge started with Stamolamprou feeding Leah Wormack, who had nine points, on a nice pick-and-roll. Stamolamprou and Rebeca Navarro then drilled back-to-back three pointers before Wormack put home an offensive board. A floater by Janee Brown was followed by a 15-footer from Wormack before Brown nailed a trey from the left wing.

The Colonials went into halftime leading 46-20. A 10-0 run in the fourth quarter would give RMU a final 76-44 victory after the squads played even in the third quarter.

Robert Morris travels to 24th-ranked Iowa this Sunday, Dec. 6. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. Eastern at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
