Robert Morris Downs Rival Penn State At Three Rivers Classic

Colonials advance to Tuesday night's Championship game vs. #8 UMass-Lowell

Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Two of the nation's top offenses didn't disappoint as Robert Morris powered past 14th-ranked Penn State taking a 6-4 victory on Monday night to advance to Tuesday's Three Rivers Classic Championship. The team's combined for 89 shots on goal with Colonials goaltender Terry Shafer making 52 saves, the fourth-most in a single-game in program history.

Daniel Leavens opened the scoring in the first period, bouncing a puck off the back of Penn State netminder Eamon McAdam and into the net. The Nittany Lions lead the nation in shots per game and showed why in the first period, outshooting the Colonials 21-7.

Penn State able to capitalize early in the second on a goal by Eric Scheid. The Colonials regained the lead just over a minute later. RMU's nation-leading power play struck again, this time with a goal by senior defenseman Tyson Wilson. Robert Morris extended the lead to 3-1 as Spencer Dorowicz danced home a goal on the doorstep. A series of line rushes led to an eventual scoring opportunity for Brandon Denham, who hopped the boards and picked up the puck, burying a shot past McAdam to put the Colonials up 4-1 to end the second period.

The Nittany Lions came back with a pair of goals in the third period to cut the gap to 4-3, but the hometown senior Zac Lynch changed all that. Greg Gibson rushed ahead with the puck off a turnover and nearly put the puck home, but a rebound came out and onto the stick of a diving Lynch who knocked the puck into the net off the edge of his stick to give RMU a 5-3 lead.

The Colonials never surrendered that two-goal advantage. Gibson scored an empty net goal before Penn State added another tally. The Nittany Lions outshot RMU 56-33 with Shafer's second career 50-plus save performance holding fast for the win.

Robert Morris (10-4-3, 8-3-3 AHC) will play 8th-ranked Massachusetts-Lowell in the Three Rivers Classic Championship game Tuesday night at 7:30pm at CONSOL Energy Center. Penn State faces Clarkson in the Consolation game at 4:30pm.
