Erie, Pa. – In a return to College Hockey America action, the
Robert Morris University women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to its league rival, the Mercyhurst Lakers, on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Following a non-conference series sweep of Maine, the Colonials (9-6-2, 3-3-1) faced a tough challenge in their return to CHA play with the league-leading Lakers (8-7-2, 6-0-1) on the road.
Redshirt sophomore
Brittany Howard accounted for the only Colonials goal of the game, an even-strength tally in the third period, on assists from senior captain
Ashley Vesci and sophomore
Katherine Murphy.
After 20 minutes of scoreless hockey in the first period, the Lakers struck three times in the second and used the multi-goal frame to pull away from the Colonials. Howard's goal late in the third made it a 3-1 affair, but RMU struggled to get its offense going early enough in the game to put pressure on Mercyhurst.
Game 2 between the Colonials and the Lakers takes place Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.
