Colonials Lose Regular Season Finale to Wagner

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team dropped a 66-60 decision to Wagner in the regular season finale at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday night. The Colonials, now 15-14 overall and 13-5 in the Northeast Conference, had won 17 consecutive home conference games dating back to 2013.
 
Robert Morris finished third in the NEC standings and will host Fairleigh Dickinson in the quarterfinals of the 2015 NEC Women's Basketball Tournament presented by nrg Home Solar. The first round match-up is slated for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff Sunday, March 8.

"We have higher expectations for this team than what we showed today," said 12th-year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "All the credit to Wagner. They wanted this game more than we did and they deserved to win tonight. We have learn that halftime is only halftime. You have to play a full 40 minutes. I know we are much so much better than what we've showed over the last four games."
 
Wagner, who trailed for the opening 30 minutes of the game, used a 31-11 scoring advantage in the game's final 13 minutes to pull away from Robert Morris. The Colonials were just 6-of-22 during the decisive stretch while the Seahawks went 9-of-17.
 
Trailing by 11 with 13:51 left in the second half, a Jasmine Nwajei lay-in started an 18-2 surge by the Seahawks. She scored eight of her game-high 28 points over the next five minutes while Tanasia Russell chipped in eight of her won. The lone RMU bucket was a back door cut and lay-up by AnnAnna Niki Stamolamprou off a feed from Ashley Ravelli. Wagner followed that with 12 consecutive points to take a 53-48 lead with 8:48 to play.
 
Stamolamprou scored the next four points, cutting the lead to one. Mikalah Mulrain, who had five points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench, would convert one shot from the chalk to tie the game at 57 with 3:51 to play. The next nine points, however, all belonged to the visiting Seahawks who pulled away for the 66-60 victory.
 
In addition to Nwajei's 28 points on 9-of-28 shooting, Jordyn Peck added12 and Russell finished with 10 points. Wagner outscored Robert Morris 45-26 in the second half.
 
Megan Smith and Stamolamprou each had 16 points for the Colonials. Rebeca Navarro added 10 points while and RMU bench that had been averaging over 21 points a game managed just eight on the night.
 
Robert Morris opened a 15-point lead midway through the first half with an 11-0 run that featured a pair of treys from Ravelli and another from Stamolamprou. Janee Brown finished the surge with a 17-foot jumper that gave the Colonials a 26-11 lead with 8:39 to play. A 10-2 run followed by Wagner, but Robert Morris scored the final six points of the first half to take a 34-21 lead at the break.
