Dover, Del. - The
Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team completed a two-win road trip with a 20-5 victory at Delaware State on a chilly Monday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The Colonials (3-1) got a team-high five points (3g, 2a) from junior midfielder
Corey Karwacki and at least one point from 14 players as they stretched their winning streak to three games, scoring 20 or more goals in each of those contests.
"We want to start off right and show the competition that we aren't the same team we've had in the past," said senior
Stefany Gale, who set a career-best with three points (2g, 1a). "In the back of everyone's head, we all want that (Northeast Conference) championship. By scoring as many goals as we have, we're showing that we have the potential to win it."
RMU leading scorer
Kristin Yoviene chipped in three more points on two goals and an assist, while junior attack
Emily Jamison recorded her fourth consecutive multi-goal game, netting a pair as well.
The Colonials scored three goals in the opening two minutes and eventually built an 8-1 lead midway through the first half; RMU had an 11-3 advantage at halftime. Junior
Jessica Karwacki cashed in for two goals - her first coming just eight seconds into the game - to go with a game-high eight draw controls.
"We were really trying to run through each one of our (offensive) sets," Karwacki said.
"This year I aim to really concentrate on moving my feet to quickly get out of double teams and make passes off to open teammates to get fast transition opportunities." Freshman
Alexis Rusnak had her first NCAA two-goal game, one of six RMU substitutes who earned at least a point. Much like in Saturday's 24-5 win at Howard, the Colonials had the opportunity to show off their team depth.
"We really worked together as a whole," Gale said. "Everyone contributed in some way to our wins and that really helped us succeed. Everyone got the chance to go out and show who they really were as players."
For the second consecutive game, sophomore
Hallie Yancey (three saves) and freshman
Mackenzie Duffy (two) split the playing time down the middle, with Yancey taking the first 30 minutes and earning her first collegiate victory in her seventh appearance for RMU.
Junior transfer
Amanda Harrington scored a goal for the second straight game, while fellow starters
Emma Baukhages,
Dana Davis and
Brittany Byerly racked up a goal and an assist apiece. The freshman Davis once again contributed at both ends of the field, leading the Colonials with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
"Defensively we were looking to create turnovers and accomplish quick transitions,"
Jessica Karwacki said. As a team, the Colonials caused 10 turnovers and picked up 24 ground balls.
Rhyan Bofinger netted her first goal of the season for RMU, which returns home next Monday for a matchup against Detroit. First draw is set for 2 p.m. from Joe Walton Stadium on the Moon Township campus.
