Niagara University, N.Y. – Freshman
Keane McIvor scored late to give the
Robert Morris University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Niagara University in the season opening game for both teams.
"Today was a great start for us," said RMU men's soccer head coach
Bill Denniston. "We've been working really hard on the defensive end of the field and we didn't really give Niagara any good opportunities to score. We didn't have many chances ourselves, but Keane was able to take advantage of one of them and give us the win."
McIvor created his own scoring opportunity in the 80th minute. Taking control of the ball 30 yards from net, he carried through a flock of Purple Eagles defenders, freeing himself inside the 18-yard box. From there, he beat Niagara keeper Joel Gerberich with a shot to the left for his first career marker.
Senior goalkeeper
Brenden Alfery benefitted from a staunch defense that allowed just seven shots. Alfery was called upon to make two saves to record his first shutout of the season and the third of his career. RMU had nine shots and held the advantage in corner kicks, 3-1.
The Colonials continue their season-opening road trip Sunday, Aug. 30, by traveling to Cleveland State for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Vikings.
