Colonials Pull Off Upset of #24 Bowling Green

Huntington, W.Va. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team made a first half goal stand up as it upset 24th-ranked Bowling Green, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the Veteran's Memorial Cup hosted by Marshall University. The win moves the Colonials record to 4-2 and gives the Falcons their first loss of the season following five consecutive victories.

"We had a tremendous start and were able to put one in," said 19th year head coach Bill Denniston. "After that, the game evened out for the rest of the half. In the second half, we got back on our heels a bit and played more defensive. Fortunately, we were able to keep them from putting one in."

The Colonials got the only goal they would need in the 21st minute. A loose ball in the Falcons box was controlled by senior Neco Brett. He was able to chip keeper Ryan Heuton to collect his sixth goal of the season.

Play turned in the second half, but senior goalkeeper Brenden Alfery and the rest of the RMU defense were able to keep a clean sheet despite 19 second half shots from the Falcons. Alfery finished with nine saves for his second shutout of the season.

"Defensively, we were solid and our concentration was excellent. We just couldn't relieve the pressure. They had us on the ropes, but Brenden made two or three good saves. They had a lot of shots, but for the most part, they were from the outside," said Denniston.

The Colonials last win against a ranked opponent came in 2005 when they defeated #14 Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-0. Robert Morris returns to North Athletic Complex for a 4:00 p.m. match against Lehigh Friday, Sept. 18.
