Pittsburgh, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University men's soccer team took the Pitt Panthers to double overtime before falling, 1-0, as they were forced to play a man down for much of the match. The loss brings the Colonials record to .500 on the season at 4-4 while the Panthers move to 4-2-1.
An even game in the first half saw the Panthers hold a slight advantage in shots, 8-5. Neither team found the net and the game went into the break as a scoreless tie.
Ten minutes into the second half, however, the flow of the game changed.
Bennett Jull was issued a red card and the Colonials would be forced to play a man short for the remainder of the match. The Panthers took advantage, launching 15 second half shots to just two for RMU.
Senior keeper
Brenden Alfery did his part in goal, making a career high 11 saves as the Colonials were able to keep the game scoreless in regulation. In overtime, Robert Morris matched the Panthers shot total, 3-3.
But Pitt eventually solved the Colonials stalwart defense. A header by Tobias Heyman off a corner kick by Raj Kahlon ended the contest in the 106th minute. It was Heyman's second score of the year.
The Colonials return to the pitch Friday, Sept. 25, by traveling to Washington, D.C., as they meet the George Washington Colonials. Kick-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
