Youngstown, Ohio – The
Robert Morris University volleyball team remained competitive through four frames, but fell to non-conference foe Youngstown State, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, Tuesday evening in the Beeghly Center.
Freshman
Taylor Lord recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and a match-leading 19 digs, while junior
Arden Fisher tabbed her second consecutive double-double and 31
st of her career as she posted a team-high 12 kills and 16 digs. For the first time all season, RMU saw multiple student-athletes record double-doubles in consecutive matches, as Fisher and fellow junior
April Krivoniak both posted double-doubles in their conference-opening victory over Saint Francis U.
Tonight, however, the Colonials (6-9) failed to capitalize on opportunities that would put them in position to swing the momentum in their favor.
After splitting the first two sets with the Penguins (7-10), RMU had a chance to take control of the match in set three when they put the pressure on Youngstown State and tied things up at 19. YSU responded with two straight points to take a slim lead, but the Colonials refused to quit and pushed two points of their own to knot the score at 21 apiece.
With a crucial set three victory on the line, the Colonials committed two consecutive errors, which put the Penguins ahead, 23-21, and swung the momentum in favor of the home team for the remainder of the match. Youngstown State stymied the Robert Morris offense in the fourth set and reduced the Colonials to a negative hitting percentage on the frame to close out the game.
The Colonials return to Northeast Conference action this weekend in New York on Friday, Oct. 2 at LIU Brooklyn and Saturday, Oct. 3 at St. Francis Brooklyn, with both matches beginning at 1 p.m.
