Colonials Split Series With 5-2 Setback at Holy Cross

Senior Greg Gibson scores his 18th goal of the season

Worcester, Mass. –  Robert Morris University men's hockey played a hard-fought one-goal game for much of the third period, before Holy Cross scored the final two goals of the game to take a 5-2 win, splitting the weekend series. Robert Morris exits the series with a two-point lead in the Atlantic Hockey conference standings, but Holy Cross still has two games in hand.

The Crusaders scored a goal with a little more than seven minutes remaining to take a 4-2 lead. A power play goal with the net empty and less than two minutes to play sealed the win for Holy Cross. Robert Morris trailed by two for most of the second period, but started the third period off with a power play goal to turn the tide. Greg Gibson notched with eighteenth goal of the season, fifth on the power play, to make it a 3-2 game. The teams played at a furious offensive pace, the Colonials generating multiple chances that didn't find the back of the net.

Holy Cross scored the first two goals of the game, holding a 2-0 lead until the final minute of the first period. Matt Cope tossed home a goal with 3.6 seconds remaining in the frame to cut the Holy Cross lead to one. The Crusaders never surrendered a lead in the game.

Coming into Saturday's game, RMU had won four straight over the Crusaders. The last time Holy Cross defeated Robert Morris was a 2-1 victory over the Colonials in Pittsburgh on November 22, 2013. Robert Morris maintains a lead in the all-time series with a 7-4-1 record.

Holy Cross outshot the Colonials 41-36 and won the faceoff battle 35-32. Robert Morris committed seven penalties to the Crusaders five, with the Colonials going 1-for-5 on the power play.

Robert Morris (14-7-3, 11-4-3 AHC) returns home to face Mercyhurst for a weekend series, beginning with Military Appreciation night on Friday, January 22, in support of the
"It's About The Warrior" Foundation. For tickets, visit RMUtickets.com or call 412-397-4949.
