Robert Morris Drops 5-4 Contest to Union

Hanover, N.H. – Strong special teams play was not enough for Robert Morris University men's hockey in a 5-4 loss to Union College at the Dartmouth College Ledyard Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Greg Gibson scored his fiftieth career goal on Saturday night and wasted little time notching goal number fifty-one. The senior from Burlington, Ontario scooped up a Union giveaway and drove straight to the net, tossing a shorthanded goal over the right pad of Alex Sakellaropoulos to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

Union struck back 2:07 when Spencer Foo put the puck past Dalton Izyk to tie the game 1-1. The Dutchmen took a 2-1 lead at 12:44 of the first on a Sebastien Gingras tally, closing the period with a 3-1 advantage after a Jeff Taylor power play goal.

Terry Shafer took over in goal to start the second period. Chase Golightly batted the puck past Sakellaropoulos just 36 seconds into the second for a power play goal, giving Golightly his fiftieth career point. Less than three minutes later with the Colonials penalty kill, Zac Lynch poked the puck away from the Dutchmen and danced up the ice, drawing a penalty en route to his fifth shorthanded goal of the year tying the game 3-3.

Union regained its' lead 6:59 into the third with Gingras' second goal of the game. The 4-3 score held as the Colonials killed one minute of a Union two-man advantage and the remaining minute of power play, but the Dutchmen struck again on Foo's second of the game with 5:32 to play.

With Shafer pulled from the net for an extra-attacker, David Friedmann put the puck on the stick of Brandon Denham in front of the net and Denham buried his 13th goal of the season to make it a 5-4 game with 35 seconds remaining but the Colonials couldn't find the tying marker.

Greg Gibson was named to the Ledyard Classic all-tournament team, scoring two goals this weekend.

Robert Morris (11-6-3, 8-3-3 AHC) returns to action with a home series against Bentley at 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh on Friday-Saturday, January 8-9. For tickets, call 412-397-4949 or visit RMUtickets.com
