Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's basketball team easily outpaced visiting Wagner Monday evening for a 64-44 win in Northeast Conference action at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The victory was the fourth consecutive for the Colonials (8-5, 2-0 NEC) and was the 700th win for RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia. Already the all-time leader at Robert Morris with 213 victories, Buscaglia improved to 700-361 in 38 years of coaching women's basketball. Buscaglia has 431 wins at the Division I level and is a three-time Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year.
"I'm really excited that my 700th career win was with this group of players," said Buscaglia. "They personify the true meaning of the term student-athlete with their play on the court, their conduct off of it and a 3.6-plus GPA in the classroom. I believe they depict the type of players that every coach would love to coach."
The Colonials were led by 18 points from Anna Niki Stamolamprou who buried a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter. She finished 6-of-13 overall, 5-of-8 from long range and had seven rebounds as well. Nine different RMU players found the scoring column.
Megan Smith tacked on nine points while
Jocelynne Jones came off the bench to lead RMU with eight rebounds and added four points in just 13 minutes of action.
"I felt really good about how we came out and played early in the first half. I felt we executed our game play really well, but I was disappointed with how we finished the second half," said Buscaglia. "Anna Niki gave us a really strong performance on both ends of the court and
Jocelynne Jones came in and gave us great effort gathering eight rebounds. Having nine different players score shows you the type of team we have and how well we share and distribute the ball."
The drama was taken out of this game rather quickly as the Colonials raced out to a 17-3 lead just six minutes after the tip-off. Stamolamprou and
Rebeca Navarro, the nation's most accurate three-point shooter at 55.6 percent, had six points during the run. RMU stretched the margin to 28-8 at the end of first frame with 10 consecutive points coming from six different players.
Robert Morris pushed the lead to 45-17 at halftime going 12-20 from the charity stripe as Wagner committed 15 fouls in the first 20 minutes. RMU shot just under 50 percent, 13-27, in the first half and buried seven three-pointers.
The Colonials took their biggest lead of the game, 53-23, when
Lou Mataly buried a three-pointer from the wing with 4:52 left in the third quarter. With the outcome already settled, the league's second leading scorer began to fill basket. Jasmine Nwajei finished with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-26 shooting. Sofia Roma nearly recorded a triple-double with nine points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks.
Robert Morris takes its four-game win streak on road next weekend for a pair of games in in New York. Their next contest will take them to the Pope Center in Brooklyn Heights for a 1:00 p.m. tilt against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan. 9.
