Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University men's hockey and Queen's University skated to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition game at 84 Lumber Arena on Saturday night.
Freshman
Matthew Graham opened the scoring in the first period. Graham, skating on the Colonials top line alongside center
Brady Ferguson and right winger
Daniel Leavens, popped in the goal to give the Colonials a 1-0 with 6:19 remaining in the first. Defenseman
Rob Mann and Leavens chipped in assists on the Graham tally.
Dalton Izyk played the first period in goal making a pair of saves as the Colonials outshot Queen's 8-2 in the frame.
Queen's struck back in the second period on a goal by Brock Edwards.
Andrew Pikul served as goaltender in the second, posting seven saves, as the Colonials and Gaels went even with eight shots apiece in the frame. The teams combined for seven penalties in the second with the Colonials going 0-for-2 with 4 shots on the man advantage.
Robert Morris' top line continued to click in the third. Leavens scored with assists by linemates Ferguson and Graham. The Gaels once again found the equalizer thanks to a Spencer Abraham goal.
Francis Marotte played the third period in goal, collecting 6 saves.
The 2-2 score held through regulation, forcing overtime. The Colonials had several quality chances but were unable to cash in. The result of the game was a tie, though the team's did play a shootout session.
Alex Tonge was the fifth skater out for Robert Morris and the first on either side to score, lifting a shot to the top side of the net for the goal. Marotte made five stops on the attempts by Queen's including the final stop to end the exhibition.
