Colonials Fall to Mountaineers, 3-0

RMU drops final non-conference match of the season to West Virginia

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University volleyball team capped its non-conference schedule with a 3-0 loss to West Virginia Wednesday evening in the Sewall Center.

Senior Arden Fisher and sophomore Taylor Lord recorded six kills each and reached double-digits in digs. Fisher also racked up three service aces. Sophomore Brianna Schmid posted five kills and a team-leading six total blocks. Junior setter Brianna Frakes dished 20 assists and put up four blocks.

Robert Morris (9-13, 3-3 NEC) kept sets one and two close with West Virginia (11-9, 2-4 Big XII), but allowed the Mountaineers to pull away in set three. WVU opened the third set on a 3-1 run, and led by as many as eight points, 18-10, midway through the frame, after the Colonials committed consecutive attack errors. The Mountaineers widened the gap to 10 points to earn their largest lead of the match at 23-12, and went on to win match point by the same margin.

Four consecutive points helped RMU to a 9-6 lead in set two, but WVU responded with an 8-1 run to turn the score around and gain a 14-10 advantage. Four straight West Virginia errors helped Robert Morris to a late lead, 22-20, but the Mountaineers got back on track and claimed six of the next eight points to claim the set, 26-24.

The two squads traded points back and forth early in the first set, then two service aces from Fisher helped Robert Morris score four points in a row and go ahead of West Virginia, 14-10. The Mountaineers tied the set multiple times before they knotted the score at 20-20, and then shortly after, stole set one by three points.

Robert Morris concludes a four-match home stand on Saturday, Oct. 15 versus NEC opponent Saint Francis U. at 3:00 p.m.
