Pittsburgh, Pa. – Robert Morris University women's hockey skated to a 2-2 tie with Vermont on Saturday afternoon at 84 Lumber Arena.
The Colonials were the first to strike and did so with the line of
Amber Rennie,
Brittany Howard and
Jaycee Gebhard hovering around the Catamounts net. Howard was able to power the puck into the goal for her first of the game, giving RMU a 1-0 lead 7:48 into the first, with assists on the goal going to Gebhard and Rennie. Vermont responded with the equalizer less than two minutes later on a goal by Kourtney Menches.
The 1-1 score held through much of the second period. With 5:30 remaining in the frame, Howard and company were once again circling the Vermont net and Howard lifted the puck over the shoulder of Catamounts goaltender Melissa Black for her second goal of the game, once again assisted by Rennie and Gebhard. The Colonials took a 2-1 lead into the period break.
Robert Morris dominated the shots and shot attempts through two periods, but the defense on both teams were able to limit each other's shots on goal in the third period to six for the Colonials and just two for Vermont. The Catamounts, however, were able to capitalize on a power play opportunity and Taylor Willard scored on the man-advantage with 4:45 remaining, knotting the game at two and force overtime.
Vermont took the sole shot in the overtime period and the game finished in a 2-2 tie. Robert Morris owned the shooting advantage with a 35-15 lead in shots on goal, out-attempting Vermont 66-50.
Howard finished the game with two goals, four blocked shots and was .500 on faceoffs.
Maggie LaGue blocked 6 shots, part of the Colonials strong defensive effort, blocking 25 shots as a team and holding the Catamounts to 15 total shots.
The Colonials are 4-0-2, one of four remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division I women's hockey. Next up, Robert Morris travels to face Merrimack in North Andover, Mass. on October 21-22 with Friday's game at 3:00pm and Saturday's at 2:00pm.
