Fairfield, Conn. – The
Robert Morris University football team dropped a 16-10 decision to Sacred Heart in a Northeast Conference game at Campus Field in Fairfield, Conn., Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Colonials to 1-7 on the season and 0-3 in league games. The Pioneers improve to 6-1 and are 1-1 in the conference.
Joe Carroll went 14-of-28 for 98 yards from his quarterback position. He hit
Malik Wells four times for 31 yards and
Tim Vecchio three times for 11 yards. Wells also rushed 14 times for 36 yards.
Blake Skuratowicz scored from one yard out on his only carry in the game.
Joseph Uhatafe and
Ryan Lewis each had career highs for tackles. Uhatafe led all players with 14 stops while Lewis tacked on 11 tackles.
Adam Wollet finished with 12 tackles.
Ose Imeokparia led all players with 77 yards rushing as the Pioneers rolled up 213 yards on the ground. Nate Chavious tacked on 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground as well. Quarterback R.J. Noel completed 8-of-16 passes for 160 yards. Moses Webb caught four passes for 94 yards.
Back-to-back mistakes by the Robert Morris punt return team gave the Pioneers possession at the Colonials six-yard line. Three plays later, Chavious cashed in on the mistakes plunging in from one-yard out. The point after attempt missed, hitting off the left upright to make it 6-0 with 6:06 left in the opening quarter.
RMU would take the lead with an 11-play, 64-yard drive that took up 5:39.
Joe Carroll went 3-for-4 for 38 yards on the drive before
Blake Skuratowicz scored on a fourth-down play from the one-yard line.
Connor Shennan's point after kick gave the Colonials a 7-6 lead with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.
Jonathan Wanat returned the opening kickoff of the second half 37 yards setting up the Colonials at the Sacred Heart 36-yard line. RMU moved the ball to the 14-yard line, setting up
Connor Shennan for a 31 yard field goal that was blocked by James Rentz.
A 68-yard pass and catch from R.J. Noel to Moses Webb moved the ball from their own 18 to the Robert Morris 14. Three players later, Chavious plunged in from a yard out and the Pioneers were on top, 16-7, after the extra point was true.
A 12-yard pass to
Blake Skuratowicz was followed by a pass interference penalty put the Colonials in position for a 26-yard field goal by Shennan that split the uprights to make it 16-10 with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter. The drive went eight plays, 44 yards.
Robert Morris returns to Joe Walton Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Central Connecticut in a Noon game.
