Robert Morris Season Ends With Loss to Wagner

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University football team saw its 2016 season come to a close with a 40-5 loss to Wagner in a Northeast Conference game at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township Saturday afternoon. The Colonials finish the year 2-9 overall and 1-4 in NEC games while Wagner heads into their final game with a 5-5 mark and 3-2 league record.

Robert Morris took a 3-0 lead two minutes after kickoff when Connor Shennan booted a career-long 49-yard field goal. That score came after a 14-yard punt return by Warren Robinson set up the Colonials at the Seahawks 32-yard line.

Wagner tied the game later in the quarter on a 33-yard field goal from James Cooper, the start of 33 consecutive points from the visiting team. Alex Thomson hit John Williams for a 68-yard catch and run before the first 15 minutes expired.

The Seahawks tacked on three more scores in the second quarter, the first a one-yard pass from Thomson to Lucas DePofi. Cooper then knocked a field goal through from 27 yards before Matthias McKinnon ran in for a one-yard touchdown.

Santoni Graham made it 33-3 early in the fourth quarter, intercepting a pass and returning it 43 yards to paydirt. The ensuing extra point try was blocked by Amir Fenwick. Zach Cooper scooped up the block and ran over 80 yards to record the defensive extra point score. Denzel Knight wrapped up the game's scoring with a four-yard run that finished off a 12-play, 92-yard drive.

Gee Stanley recorded one of two Colonials sacks in the game. That brought his total to 8.5 on the season and set an RMU record for sacks by a freshman. Adam Wollet finished with a game-high 12 tackles.

Freshman wide receiver Tim Vecchio finished with a season-high 77 yards on four receptions.
