Late Goals Push Colonials Past Pioneers

Northford, Ct. – Robert Morris University men's hockey used a three-goal outburst late in the game to secure a 4-1 victory over Sacred Heart. The Colonials now hold a 17-0-1 all-time mark over the Pioneers and are now 4-3-2 overall this year.

THE BULLET
Daniel Leavens scored his second goal of the season with 3:00 remaining in the game, starting a three-goal spurt by the Colonials to finish off the Pioneers. Leavens game-winning goal is the fourth game-winner of his career. Leavens added two assists for his first multi-point game of the season.

Brady Ferguson scored two power play goals to bring his total to nine power play points on the season, tied for first nationally. Eric Israel added a power play assist to give him eight power play points, tied for third nationally.

Robert Morris has scored a power play goal in 8 of its 9 games so far this season. The only game the Colonials did not score a power play goal, they were not awarded a power play in the game (Oct. 29 vs. Army).

Ferguson moved into the top five in scoring in NCAA hockey with his fourth multi-point game of the season. Ferguson is neck and neck with Holy Cross' Mike Barrett for the Atlantic Hockey scoring lead and continues to lead the Colonials with 16 points (8G, 8A).

Alex Tonge dealt three assists for his second career three-point game (Nov. 4 at Ohio State) and third multi-point game of the season. Timmy Moore's empty-net goal marks his fourth tally of the year.

Sacred Heart's Jordan Minello ended Francis Marotte's first long run at a shutout bid, 3:26 into the third period.

Marotte started his fifth game of the season, the seventh he's played, running his record to 4-1-1, the owner of each of the Colonials victories. Marotte keeps his high save percentage intact making 27 saves on 29 shots, entering the weekend as the nation's leading rookie in goal with a .946 save percentage.

RMU finished the game with a 42-27 advantage in the faceoff circle.

RECAP
FIRST
Robert Morris controls much of the first period, dominating puck possession thanks to an outstanding period in the faceoff circle. RMU led Sacred Heart 15-2 in faceoffs, with Ferguson winning all eight draws he took.

RMU was 0-for-2 on power plays and successfully killed a penalty that ran through the end of the first into the second.

SECOND
Sacred Heart piled on the penalties, leading to a 5-on-3 opportunity for Robert Morris.

Ferguson took a feed from Israel with 12 seconds left in the 5-on-3 and fired the puck from the right side past SHU's Nathan Perry for the power play goal to give RMU a 1-0 lead, 7:09 into the frame.

THIRD
Sacred Heart gets on the board with a goal by Jordan Minello, 3:26 into the period.

Daniel Leavens scores with less than three minutes remaining to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead. Ferguson forces a Sacred Heart turnover and Tonge goes up the ice with Leavens for the goal.

The Pioneers take a penalty and Robert Morris takes advantage with the team's second power play goal of the game, the second by Ferguson, with assists to Leavens and Tonge.

Timmy Moore adds an empty net goal to complete the scoring, assisted by Spencer Dorowicz and Leavens.

TODAY'S MO-MENTUM
Daniel Leavens' goal with three minutes remaining turned the tide for the Colonials late in the game. The trio of Leavens, Ferguson and Tonge combined for both the go-ahead goal and the third goal of the game with less than two minutes left, to put Robert Morris ahead for good.
