Rochester, N.Y. – Five unanswered goals propelled the No. 10
Robert Morris University women's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over the RIT Tigers Saturday afternoon in the Gene Polisseni Center.
The four-point win marks the Colonials' (9-1-4, 5-0-1) largest margin of victory over an opponent this season, and RMU remains undefeated in College Hockey America (CHA) play.
Junior forward
Amanda Pantaleo scored a career-high two goals to match her career-best two points in her first multi-point effort of the season. Seniors
Rikki Meilleur and
Maeve Garvey notched their second and third goals of the season, respectively. Garvey turned in a two-point effort with an assist to go along with her goal. Freshman forward
Jaycee Gebhard recorded her team-leading fifth power-play goal on the year. Junior defenseman
Katherine Murphy matched her career-best two assists. Freshman
Natalie Marcuzzi earned her second career assist. Senior goaltender
Jessica Dodds made 23 saves.
Five minutes and thirty seconds into the third period, Meilleur put the Colonials up by three when she tapped in a pass from Murphy to score right in front of the net. On the final scoring play of the game, Garvey skated the puck into the neutral zone and fed Pantaleo, who took a shot that bounced right back to her off of Murphy's skate. Pantaleo's second try went in and increased the Robert Morris advantage to four goals.
Gebhard's power-play goal was the lone tally of the second period. Sophomore defenseman
Kirsten Welsh passed it to Gebhard from the point, then Gebhard dished it out to redshirt junior forward
Brittany Howard. Gebhard started skating toward the net as Howard fed her a pass, and the rookie sent it right past RIT goaltender Brooke Stoddart at 14:22 in the frame.
For the second-straight game, RIT opened the scoring with an early power-play goal, but today it turned out to be the only goal RMU would allow. Senior
Mikaela Lowater took a shot that got blocked, but the puck found its way to Garvey who was skating right behind her defenseman, and sent it down the middle and to the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1. With two minutes and 55 seconds remaining in the frame, Pantaleo redirected a shot from junior
Jessica Gazzola to get the go-ahead goal leading into the second period.
Four of the Colonials' five goals on the night were even strength tallies. RMU and RIT both went one-for-seven on the power play. Robert Morris topped RIT in shots on goal, 32-24.
The Colonials are coming up on a bye week before returning to action on the road at the Windjammer Tournament in Burlington, Vt., on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26.
Lucky Number Seven
The Colonials are currently riding a seven-game unbeaten streak. This is the longest such streak since RMU went undefeated for 14-straight games in 2013-14.
