Colonials End Slump With Spark From Brown

Emmitsburg, Md. – Junior Janee Brown tied her career-high with 14 points and sparked the Robert Morris University women's basketball team to a 74-67 win at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., Monday night. The Colonials shot 57.1 percent (28-49), tied for the fourth-best performance in team history. RMU moves to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in the Northeast Conference while Mount St. Mary's slips to 5-16 and 3-7 in the league.

"I'm really proud of the team – how they kept their heads up and kept believing in themselves after a great beginning to the season and then some tough losses because they have showed it in the past," said 13th-year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "We said one of the keys was to come out with a sense of urgency and we certainly did that. Janee Brown gave us every ounce that she could give us while Anna Niki found her shooting rhythm. A number of people contributed in a variety of ways and that's one of the key things we need. We're going to enjoy this victory tonight and prepare to get better on Wednesday."

Brown finished with 14 points, tying her career-high, as she made her first start of the season. She went 6-of-7 from the floor and had four assists in two steals. Anna Niki Stamolamprou tied for game-high honors with 21 points as she went 6-10 overall and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Leah Wormack also reached double-digits coming off the bench to score 10 points in 14 mintues.

Robert Morris wasted little time establishing a lead. Megan Smith connected from close to start the game and a steal and lay-in by Janee Brown had the Colonials out to a 4-0 lead just 31 seconds after tipoff. The first 11 points of the game belonged to RMU before the Mount got on the board 4:26 after the opening tip. The teams combined for 42 first quarter points with the Colonials holding a 24-18 lead.

The pace slowed in the second quarter with the teams combining for just 19 points, but the Colonials had 11 of those and were able to push their advantage to 11, 35-24, at the break. Robert Morris had the last six points of the quarter. Leah Wormack buried a pair of long jumpers for the final four points and had eight in the opening 20 minutes.

Robert Morris shot 59.3 percent (16-27) in the first half, including 13-of-17 (76.5%) on two-point attempts. The Mount cooled off in the second quarter going just 4-of-12 from the field.

Mount trimmed the Robert Morris lead to seven points, 42-35, with a 6-0 run in the third quarter. A Wormack lay-up off a feed from Jocelynne Jones was followed by Wormack feeding Jones on the next possession. The back-to-back plays sparked a 10-3 run by the Colonials to end the quarter.

A lay-up by Brown just 11 seconds into the final frame gave Robert Morris its biggest lead of the game, 54-38. The Mount began chipping away at the Colonials lead, a 10-2 run by the host squad trimming the RMU lead to seven points with 4:43 left. The Mountaineers eventually got the margin to two possessions – six points – on four separate occasions, but the Colonials would not allow them to get any closer.

Robert Morris returns to the Charles L. Sewall Center for the first time since Jan. 18 when they host the Bryant Bulldogs in a 1:00 p.m. game Saturday, Feb. 6.
