Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Colonials Comeback Attempt Falls Short

Pittsburgh, Pa. –  Despite a late comeback attempt, Army West Point pulled away with a 3-1 win over Robert Morris University men's hockey Friday night.

The Colonials offense was held off the board in a fast-paced first period. Robert Morris registered 16 shots on goal to the Black Knights' ten. Four of Army's shots came on its' two power play attempts, but the Colonials killed both of those penalties.

In the second, Terry Shafer made a save, kicking out the right pad to stop a shot by C.J. Reuschlein from sneaking in near the post. Army West Point broke through on a goal by Blake Box 7:04 into the second. Following the save by Shafer, Brendan McGuire keeps the puck in, dumps it into the corner where Clint Carlisle sends it around the boards to McGuire near the blue line. The sophomore found Box between the circles and he fired the puck through traffic and into the net. The Black Knights outshot RMU 14-11 in the second period.

In the third, just eight seconds into a power play opportunity, the Black Knights scored to take a 2-0 lead. McGuire camped out at the top of Shafer's crease. A shot from the outside was saved by Shafer's blocker but ricocheted off McGuire's body and in.

The final five minutes of the game, the Colonials dominated possession and wound up outshooting Army 13-6 in the last frame. With 2:01 remaining, a power play chance and the goalie pulled, Robert Morris capitalized on the 6-on-4 opportunity as Brandon Denham collected his eighth power play goal of the season, tied for second in NCAA hockey. Matt Cope took a pass from Zac Lynch and connected with Denham to the left of the goalpost where he potted his 18th goal of the season. After the goal, Greg Gibson centered a pass that just went by Lynch on the doorstep, one of several chances late in the game.

"I thought we were just average tonight," said Head Coach Derek Schooley after the game. "I thought they did a very good job of keeping us to the outside and keeping us to the perimeter, making sure we didn't get a lot of second chance looks."

"I thought we avoided some of the dumber penalties we've been taking lately," said Denham. "We need to keep improving on it."

"We have to chip it by them and use our speed to go get the puck, play against their defense," Denham continued.

"I didn't like how we weren't around the front of the net," said Schooley. "We were way too easy to play against. It's almost like if we weren't going to score on rush offense, we weren't going to score."

The Colonials (17-8-4, 14-5-4 AHC) face off against Army West Point (9-11-7, 7-9-7 AHC) at 7:05pm. Robert Morris stayed in first place in the conference standings with 32 points and didn't lose ground to second place Air Force Academy, which lost to Holy Cross. The Crusaders are now tied with the Falcons for second with 29 points.

"It's going to come down to who wants to outwork the other team," said Cope. "If we just put our nose to the grindstone and work really hard, we'll be successful."
