Pittsburgh, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team returned to the win column tonight as they opened their final regular season series with a 2-0 shutout victory over RIT at 84 Lumber Arena.
With the win, the Colonials (15-13-5, 7-8-4) secured home ice for the first round of the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament.
For the third straight game, redshirt sophomore
Brittany Howard opened scoring for the Colonials. Howard tallied a season-high two goals in her second multi-goal game of the year. Juniors
Maeve Garvey and
Jessica Dodds assisted on Howard's first goal, while freshmen
Maggie LaGue and
Sarah Quaranta dished out the assists on the second.
During RMU's second power-play of the game, RIT cleared and Dodds caught the puck in the Colonials defensive zone. She sent it down ice along the boards to Garvey who set up a centering pass to Howard. The redshirt sophomore slid the puck past the skate of RIT's Jetta Rackleff at 4:43 in the second period to put RMU on the board first.
Just two minutes and forty-five seconds later, Howard positioned herself perfectly in front of the net again. Quaranta dished the puck to Howard where she made a similar move around the skate of Rackleff, this time from the opposite side, to score her second goal of the game and team-leading 16
th of the season.
RIT earned three power-play opportunities in the third, but the RMU penalty kill was perfect on the night and held the Tigers to an overall 0-for-4 mark on the man advantage.
The first period featured one power play for each squad, but both teams came up empty.
The Colonials kept the Tigers on their toes all night, as RMU edged RIT in shots on goal, 41-16.
