Henderson, Nev. – The
Robert Morris University softball team dropped a 9-0 decision in five innings to Nevada to conclude play in the
DeMarini Desert Classic Sunday morning at a mostly sunny Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.
Â
Nevada's win finished a 5-0 weekend for the Wolf Pack as it scored at least eight runs in four of those games.
Â
Nevada used six hits, including a trio of long balls, to open up a commanding 6-0 lead by the middle of the second inning.
Â
After RMU went in order in the first, senior
Kristen Gabelt reached to start the second inning. Two outs later, a Nevada error extended the frame. Sophomore
Olivia Lorusso then ripped a single to left on the eighth pitch of her at bat to load the bases, but a strikeout followed.
                                                                                                                                                                                                             Â
A pair of singles, a walk and a wild pitch plated one run for the Wolf Pack in the third. The next two half-innings were of the 1-2-3 variety.
Â
Gabelt knocked an opposite-field single to right to start the fourth, but the next three Colonials were retired.
Â
Nevada put the game away by using two hits and a Colonial miscue to score a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
Â
RMU was unable to mount a rally in the home half of the inning to prolong the contest.
Â
Freshman
Kaitlin Ellzy provided a respectable effort in relief for RMU as she allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings.
Â
Robert Morris will seek to get back on track when it resumes action next weekend with five games over three days at the JMU Invitational. The Colonials will face defending America East champion Binghamton twice and will also have a matchup with nationally ranked James Madison.
